Lon had depicted birds of prey on each of his early Academy football program covers but it was the October 5, 1956 one for Colorado College, a falcon, that was adopted as their logo. Jay and Karen, Lon's son and daughter-in-law, returned from a trip to Colorado Springs in 1989 with a drinking glass etched with this logo that they had purchased at the Academy for Lon. Though retired, it inspired him to recreate the falcon -- first in a small study, then as seen here.
