Presentation of the Falcon

October 26, 1990

Lon had depicted birds of prey on each of his early Academy football program covers but it was the October 5, 1956 one for Colorado College, a falcon, that was adopted as their logo. Jay and Karen, Lon's son and daughter-in-law, returned from a trip to Colorado Springs in 1989 with a drinking glass etched with this logo that they had purchased at the Academy for Lon. Though retired, it inspired him to recreate the falcon -- first in a small study, then as seen here. The three traveled to the Academy for this presentation by Colonel John Clune, the officer in charge of athletics. (Click here for closer view of painting)
